We are doing our best to help people get through their PhD because I (Albert, co-founder) have personally been through it during my time in grad school.
The workload was tough during my PhD. Not only was the project academically challenging, but the fact that I had to work on it by myself made it extremely difficult. Other students in my lab understood my project only on the surface because they worked on tangentially related projects. I couldn't rely on them for practical suggestions or the sense of empathy that comes from deep understanding.
This also meant that I couldn't really connect with my partner or my family with regards to the challenges of pursuing a PhD.
Fortunately, I managed to overcome the major technical hurdle in my project and complete my PhD successfully. However, the experience left an indelible mark in my soul and made me seek ways that can help future PhD students not experience such pain.
True, great achievements are accompanied by pain and suffering, but I think there is a difference between well-informed suffering and suffering quietly, alone and without resources. Throughout my time in academia, a number of my peers took their own lives due to stress and loneliness. I believe that had they been aware of other peers going through their own difficult journeys and had they been provided with opportunities to connect with them, they might still be with us today.
Having been through the PhD journey myself, I know what PhD students need to get through it. PhD Valley is the toolkit, refuge, and the 3rd space for PhDs so they can get their degree with impressive CV, a strong network, a lined-up career path, and a smile on their face.
